Rabat – Saray Immo signed a landmark 12-year solar power agreement with Norway’s Empower New Energy yesterday, marking a significant advancement in Morocco’s renewable energy landscape.

Based in Berrechid, Morocco, Saray Immo is one of the largest Moroccan industrial and logistics platforms. Norway’s Empower New Energy is a renewable energy financier and co-developer that finances, builds, and owns clean power plants for commercial, industrial, and agricultural energy users.

The $3.5 million investment will finance, construct, and operate two solar plants with a combined capacity of 5.8 MWp on Saray Immo buildings and at sister company Tanakoo’s manufacturing site in Berrechid, Casablanca.

Norway’s Ambassador to Morocco, Sjur Larsen, hosted the signing ceremony for the project, which Empower New Energy co-developed with Azolis’s Moroccan subsidiary. Azolis won both the EPC and O&M contracts for implementation.

The solar installation will cover approximately 49,000 square meters of rooftop space at Saray Immo’s new, highly automated manufacturing facilities.

Morocco’s abundant sunshine will generate an estimated 9,600 MWh of clean electricity annually, significantly reducing operational energy costs for the companies.

Beyond economic benefits, the project will eliminate approximately 6,000 tons of CO2 emissions yearly, supporting Morocco’s ambitious green transition goals.

The agreement comes as a step to boost Morocco’s ambitions to increase renewable energy’s share in its electricity generation capacity from 38% to 52% by 2030.

This project represents Empower New Energy’s third, and largest, investment in Morocco to date. CEO Terje Osmundsen spoke of the significance of the partnership in a press statement saying: “I am delighted to sign this ground-breaking solar investment project in Morocco, a country with huge potential for sustainable economic growth but experiencing the effects of global warming.”

For his side, Souheil Badaa, CEO of Tanakoo and representative of Saray Immo, spoke of values alignment between partners, noting “Saray Immo proudly marks this partnership with Empower New Energy and Azolis, supported by a shared vision for a sustainable future.”

Youssef Tlemcani, co-founder and managing director at Azolis, added: “We are excited to join this long-term partnership alongside Empower New Energy and Saray Immo.”

The project is “a benchmark for clean energy adoption by industrial players in Morocco” Tlemcani continued, adding that they “aim to support other C&I players in their decarbonization efforts.”

Ambassador Larsen commended the international cooperation aspect, saying: “Today marks a significant milestone in the collaboration between Norway and Morocco.”

He further noted that “such partnerships pave the way toward a greener and more prosperous future for all,” pointing out that “this agreement highlights the vast possibilities for cooperation between Norwegian and Moroccan business partners.”

The project is just one example of an emerging trend in which Morocco’s industrial leaders are embracing renewable energy solutions to reduce both environmental impact and operational costs while contributing to the country’s sustainability objectives.
