Rabat – Morocco achieved notable progress in its energy sector in 2023, with a significant increase in renewable energy production and overall electricity output.

The national electricity production reached 42.38 terawatt-hours by the end of 2023, marking a 2.3% rise compared to 2022. This growth was driven primarily by an increased reliance on renewable energy sources.

The total installed electricity capacity reached 11.42 gigawatts, reflecting an increase of 363 megawatts compared to the previous year.

Electricity demand also grew by 4% in 2023, reaching 43.95 terawatt-hours. A whopping 96% of this demand was met through domestic production.

Zohair Chorfi, President of the National Electricity Regulatory Authority (ANRE), shared this data during a presentation of the 2023 annual report to the Parliamentary Committee on Infrastructure, Energy, Mining, and Sustainable Development on Wednesday.

Growing Demand for Electricity

The report noted that renewable energy contributed significantly to the country’s electricity production. Morocco generated 9,189 gigawatt-hours of electricity from renewable sources in 2023, which accounted for 21.7% of the total electricity production. This represented a 22.7% increase compared to 2022.

Wind energy led the renewable sector, with installed wind power capacity reaching 2,017 megawatts in 2023, an increase of 30% over the previous year. Solar and hydroelectric power also played key roles in the country’s energy mix.

Chorfi said that Morocco is committed to transitioning gradually and effectively to renewable energy by taking advantage of its abundant solar and wind resources.

Since 2009, Morocco has pursued a clear strategy under King Mohammed VI’s leadership. This has positioned the country as a global model in clean energy and sustainable development.

Morocco’s long-term energy strategy aims to achieve energy independence, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and meet its international climate commitments.
