Rabat – Around two million Muslim pilgrims gathered at Mount Arafat today to mark one of the most significant rituals of the Hajj pilgrimage.

The ascent to the rocky hill, known as Jabal al-Rahmah or the Mount of Mercy, is considered the pinnacle of the Hajj journey.

Pilgrims spent the entire day in prayer on the Arafat plateau, approximately 20 kilometers east of Mecca. This spiritual exercise involves continuous supplication and seeking forgiveness from Allah. The day at Arafat is viewed as an opportunity for deep spiritual reflection and connection with God.

Following the day-long prayers, pilgrims will proceed to Muzdalifah, situated between Arafat and Mina, to collect pebbles for the symbolic stoning of the devil ritual. This act commemorates Prophet Abraham’s rejection of the devil’s temptation as he prepared to sacrifice his son Ismael.

Following the stoning ritual, worshippers will partake in the ritual sacrifice of animals, marking the beginning of the Eid Al Adha festival. Also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, Eid Al Adha celebrates Abraham’s devotion and willingness to follow God’s command.

The Hajj pilgrimage, which is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, is an obligation for all Muslims who are physically and financially able to undertake the journey at least once in their lifetime.

Saudi authorities have confirmed that this year’s pilgrimage includes over two million participants, noting that they are facing extreme weather conditions.

Saudi Arabia’s Health Ministry issued warnings earlier this week about high temperatures, ranging from 45 to 48 degrees Celsius.

Mohammed Al-Abdulaali, the Health Ministry’s spokesman, emphasized the importance of safety guidelines to prevent heat-related issues among pilgrims.

These guidelines include using umbrellas for shade, staying hydrated, and taking breaks to avoid fatigue and heat stress. The National Center for Meteorology (NCM) highlighted the expected hot conditions, urging strict adherence to health precautions to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all pilgrims.
