Rabat — Mohcine Jamal, one of Morocco’s most beloved musical icons, died today following a prolonged battle with illness.

His daughter confirmed the sad news, marking the end of an era for Moroccan traditional music.

Leaving decades of musical artistic legacy that has pleased the ears of generations, Jamal died in a hospital in Tangier.

Moroccan artists mourned the loss and shared messages of condolences via their social media accounts.

Born in Tangier in 1948, Jamal grew up immersed in the rich artistic environment of the coastal city.

From an early age, he absorbed the diverse sounds of Moroccan musical traditions, which helped shape his unique vocal identity.

His musical journey began in earnest during the late 1970s when he joined the National Radio as a vocalist.

While Jamal drew inspiration from Arab legends like Mohammed Abdel Wahab and Farid al-Atrash, he always maintained his distinctly Moroccan voice, style, and music.

Jamal’s artistry went beyond his powerful voice. Throughout his 40-year career, he thoughtfully modernized Moroccan music while preserving its traditional elements.

He skillfully blended traditional Moroccan rhythms like Aita and folk beats with contemporary musical approaches.

The singer performed at numerous national and Arab music festivals, cementing his position in the Moroccan artistic landscape.

His legacy lives on through his memorable hits, including “Al-Zain Fal-Thalatheen” (Beauty at Thirty), “Akeed Akeed” (Certainly), “Ismaa Liya Nwaseek” (Listen to My Advice), “Ayounak Qalou Li” (Your Eyes Told Me), “Ya Al-Ghadi F’tariq Moulay Abdessalam” (You Who Travel on Moulay Abdessalam’s Road), and “Hadi Snin” (It’s been Years) – songs that continue to resonate deeply with Moroccan audiences.

With Mohsen Jamal’s passing, Morocco loses one of the last guardians of authentic musical tradition.
