The Attorney General of the Court of Appeal in Casablanca has ordered the opening of a judicial investigation into the kidnapping of Moroccan nationals by criminal gangs operating in Myanmar, in the border areas with Thailand.

The attorney general said in a statement on Wednesday that some victims and families of victims have been interviewed in this regard, especially those who have filed complaints.

The results of the preliminary investigation revealed that these are criminal networks specializing in human trafficking operating in the border areas of Myanmar, luring their victims with employment contracts in these areas with international e-commerce companies in exchange for attractive salaries, the statement added.

However, it turned out that this approach was only a means to deceive, lure and exploit them, and then hold them captive and force them to work under harsh conditions.

The Prosecutor General also urged caution and vigilance in the face of ongoing recruitment attempts via the Internet and through certain intermediaries in Morocco and abroad.

Fourteen Moroccans have been kidnapped and are now trapped on the Thai border. The Moroccan embassy in Bangkok said it was monitoring the situation and promised to do everything possible to help the stranded victims.

Morocco’s Ambassador Abderrahim Rahhaly confirmed that several Moroccan nationals are being held by illegal organizations in rebel-held areas near the Myanmar-Thailand border.

The embassy is actively taking steps to assist them, the ambassador said.

Earlier this month, a source confirmed to Morocco World News that the number of the Moroccan trapped victims is estimated at 14 nationals
