Rabat – Dozens of high school students in a High School in Casablanca’s Mohammadi neighborhood were rushed to the emergency department at the city’s Mohammed V Hospital on Wednesday after suffering from severe suffocation that is reported to have been caused by a gas leak from an adjoining factory.

Around 60 students were transported to the hospital’s emergency ward today to receive immediate medical attention following episodes of suffocation within the school premises, particularly among those experiencing respiratory distress.

According to converging news reports, medical personnel at Mohammed V Regional Hospital in Hay Mohammadi promptly administered first aid to some of the students who were discharged earlier in the day, while approximately 18 students remained under observation and treatment at the time of reporting.

Reports indicate that the affected students have been admitted to the pediatric unit for further treatment, with some having been discharged while the cause of the suffocation remains undisclosed for the others.

Residents all point out the nearby nail manufacturing facility as the culprit behind the tragic accident.

One parent confirmed in an interview with a local newspaper that their daughter, who was among those transported to the emergency department, had detected a strong odor of gas several days prior to the incident.

In addition, the parent revealed that their minor daughter is currently experiencing respiratory difficulties and that the school administration had been notified of the gas odor so that they could take appropriate measures before the situation got out of hand.
