Rabat – Richard Slayman, the first man to ever receive a genetically modified pig kidney transplant, has been reported to have died two months following his surgery.

Despite his untimely death, Slayman’s surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital in March marked a pivotal moment in xenotransplantation, the process of using organs from animals to treat humans, reports indicate.

The 62-year-old agreed to the surgery to offer hope to the thousands awaiting life-saving transplants.

The surgical team at Massachusetts General Hospital expressed profound sorrow at Slayman’s death, extending heartfelt condolences to his family.

While the cause of his passing remains undisclosed, medical professionals said that there were no indications linking his death directly to the transplant.

This milestone in medical science had raised expectations, with surgeons anticipating the longevity of the pig kidney to extend at least two years.

Slayman’s experience stands distinct from previous instances where pig organs were transplanted into brain-dead donors or in the case of heart transplants, which resulted in fatalities within months.

For Slayman, the road to xenotransplantation began in 2018 when he received a human kidney transplant at the same hospital.

However, complications arose last year, necessitating his return to dialysis. As his condition worsened, his medical team recommended a pig kidney transplant.

Slayman’s family expressed gratitude to the medical professionals who worked on his xenotransplantation.

“Their enormous efforts leading the xenotransplant gave our family seven more weeks with Rick, and our memories made during that time will remain in our minds and hearts,” the family stated in reports.

Xenotransplantation, once impeded by the immediate rejection of animal tissue by the human immune system, has seen recent breakthroughs in the genetic modification of pigs to render their organs more compatible with humans.
