Rabat – The Moroccan flag was hoisted at the entrance of Malmö’s historic city hall during a visit this week by the Moroccan ambassador to Sweden, signaling a new era of strengthened ties between the two countries.

Ambassador Karim Medrek’s visit to the iconic city hall comes months after Morocco recalled its ambassador to Sweden as a form of protest over the Scandinavian country’s authorizing a protest during which a copy of the Quran was burnt in a public space.

Following the incident, a number of high-ranking Swedish officials expressed their concern over the offensive act’s effect on the country’s ties with Muslim nations, including Morocco.

Sources from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told Europa Press in July 2023 that the Swedish Government “values and works to further develop good bilateral relations with Morocco.”

Ambassador Medrek’s visit to one of the most historic sites in Malmo, which was organized by the Moroccan Association of Malmo and drew over 60 participants, signaled a first step towards the full recovery of diplomatic ties between Morocco and Sweden.

“During my visit to Skåne County, the Moroccan flag was raised on the City hall of Malmö, carrying promises of cooperation and partnership,” Medrek wrote on his official X account following the visit.

“Fruitful meetings with local authorities, economic actors, and academic institutions, to consolidate relations btw Morocco and Sweden,” the post read.

Throughout his visit to the Scania region, Ambassador Medrek engaged with Moroccan communities residing in Malmo and its surroundings and emphasized King Mohammed VI’s unwavering support for the Moroccan diaspora.

Commenting on the proceedings of his visit, the Moroccan diplomat wrote on X: “During my official visit to Skäne County and as part of efforts to promote dialogue & interaction with the Moroccan community, I held a meeting with Moroccans living in Malmö & the surrounding area, during which I praise many Moroccan skills for their commitment achievements.”

He highlighted Morocco’s impressive development trajectory under the visionary leader of King Mohammed VI, saying that the North African kingdom has positioned itself in recent years as a regional powerhouse and a beacon of progress in many areas.

Ambassador Medrek spoke in particular of Morocco’s dynamic economic growth, noting how this has been fueled by ambitious structural reforms implemented over the past two decades.

The reforms have pushed Morocco into the ranks of the most robust economies in Africa and the Arab world, presenting numerous opportunities for collaboration and mutual benefit with Sweden.

In addition to fostering closer ties with the Moroccan diaspora, Ambassador Medrek focused on enhancing consular services to better serve the needs of Moroccan nationals living in Sweden.

The visit equally provided a platform for fruitful discussions with Swedish counterparts, including local authorities, business leaders, and academic institutions.

During the Moroccan diplomat’s visit, talks with local authorities centered on areas of mutual interest such as renewable energy, smart city development, and academic exchanges.

Ambassador Medrek paid tribute to Moroccan talents who have made significant contributions to their homeland’s global standing, further cementing the strong bonds between Morocco and its diaspora.
