Rabat – The Emirate of Sharjah, the third-largest emirate in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) behind Abu Dhabi and Dubai, has announced a ban on New Year’s fireworks celebrations.
The decision, communicated through an Instagram post by the Sharjah Police, reflects a commitment to “expressing genuine solidarity and humanitarian cooperation with the brothers in the Gaza Strip.”
The statement issued called for the cooperation of both institutions and individuals, warning of legal measures against those who violate the instruction. It underscored the deep-rooted culture and ideology of humanitarian solidarity followed by the Emirate of Sharjah.
This decision seems specific to Sharjah, as public celebrations and fireworks continue to be advertised in other emirates of the UAE. The move stands as a significant gesture in a region where political dynamics have undergone significant shifts, notably with the UAE setting a precedent by establishing ties with Israel in 2020.

The ban on New Year’s Eve fireworks in Sharjah takes place against the backdrop of ongoing Israeli Occupation Forces’ genocidal campaign in Gaza. The health ministry in Gaza estimates a staggering toll, with 21,000 people reported killed in IOF ground and air strikes operation, and 54,918 others wounded.
The devastating impact of Israel’s brutal Gaza campaign is grimly evident in the displacement of nearly all of Gaza’s 2.3 million inhabitants, many of whom have had to flee their homes multiple times.
Sharjah’s decision to forgo fireworks, a traditional symbol of celebration, takes on a broader significance beyond mere festivity. For local authorities, the move is an expression of Sharjah’s commitment to humanitarian values and its stance on issues of global importance.
Yet while Sharjah takes this distinctive approach to New Year’s Eve celebrations, the broader UAE continues to navigate its evolving diplomatic landscape.
