Rabat – Members of the judicial police in Marrakech arrested three French tourists on Monday, aged 29 and 30, for the alleged possession and circulation of counterfeit banknotes.

According to a security source, the suspects had used several counterfeit foreign currency banknotes to pay service bills at one of Marrakech’s hotels.

The same source added that searches and investigations have led to the identification and arrest of the suspects in possession of an extra 25 counterfeit euro banknotes.

The defendants were subjected to a judicial investigation under the supervision of the public prosecutor’s office to clarify the details of the case and determine any possible links with counterfeiting networks.

Bank Al-Maghrib (BAM), Morocco’s central bank, reported a decrease in identified counterfeit banknotes in its annual report on the economic, monetary, and financial condition for the 2022 fiscal year.

BAM and the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) inked a Memorandum of Understanding on December 18 in Rabat to implement the third phase of the Central Banks Bilateral Assistance and Capacity Building Program (BCC).

With the help of the BCC program, the bank aims to support stable and inclusive financial systems, implement sound monetary policies, and increase the efficacy, resilience, and sustainability of their operations.
