MASEN Unveils Prequalified Firms for Mega 400-MW Noor III Solar Project

Rabat – Morocco’s Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN) has unveiled a list of international consortiums and companies that prequalify for the construction of the mega 400-MW solar energy project.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, MASEN said that the prospective partners are selected through a “rigorous process” initiated in late 2023.

Selected companies will take on responsibilities spanning the design, funding, construction, operation, and maintenance of the third installment, Noor Midelt III, within the solar complex, the statement detailed.

The list of consortiums features UAE-based, Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC, and Masdar in partnership with Morocco-based TAQA Morocco.

The second consortium includes Spanish Acciona Generacion Renovable collaborating with Moroccan-based Green Of Africa.

Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power Company in collaboration with Morocco’s Nareva Holding are forming the third consortium on the list.

The list of contending consortiums equally includes Spain’s Cobra Instalaciones y Servicios, and France’s Vinci Concessions.

France’s EDF Renouvelables S.A. in conjunction with Japan’s Mitsui & Co also feature in the mix. Spanish Iberdrola Renovables Internacional S.A.U equally pre-qualified to take part in the construction of the project.

UAE’s Kahrabel FZE in alliance with France’s GDF International form another consortium in addition to China’s SPIC Huanghe Hydropower Development in collaboration with AMEA Power, Ltd.

Noor Midelt III is set to boast an estimated 400 MW of photovoltaic installed capacity, coupled with a storage capability of around 400 MWh utilizing battery-based energy storage systems (BESS). The project is part of Morocco’s ambitious targets for renewable energy integration.

The technological blend not only aims to meet the nation’s energy demands during peak periods but also contributes significantly to the global transition toward renewable energy integration.

The project’s financing structure seeks to boost the involvement of both Moroccan and international private sectors. The project also allows commercial banks, both locally and internationally, to play a substantial role in financing the venture.

With Noor Midelt III joining the existing Noor Midelt I and Noor Midelt II, the complete complex is poised to emerge as a global powerhouse in solar and renewable storage capacities, MASEN explains in the statement.

The three installations are projected to reach a total production capacity of approximately 1600 MW.
