Rabat – The world is in need of a new era of multilateral collaboration for integrated management of diverse pollutants, Morocco’s Energy Minister Leila Benali said on the sidelines of the COP28 conference in Dubai.
Speaking to the press, the minister stressed the need to rebuild trust in multi-party cooperation and boost access to funding, specifically in climate and environmental finances.
Echoing Morocco’s stance, she reiterated the need for cohesion between different COP meetings and multi-party entities, advocating for a comprehensive approach to monitoring emissions, directly impacting economic and social development.
The Moroccan pavilion at COP28, Benali noted, has been a hub for significant meetings, negotiations, and the signing of pivotal agreements.
Morocco’s COP28 delegation comprised ministers, private sector partners engaged in climate and sustainable development, and civil society stakeholders.
Benali expressed pride in Morocco’s ongoing green projects. Notable among these projects are those focused on carbon-free industry, seawater desalination, renewable energies, and Morocco’s debut in the liquefied natural gas market.
In addition, she pointed out Morocco’s strides in producing green hydrogen, a potential catalyst for energy transition and regional integration between Africa and Europe.
Benali equally congratulated the United Arab Emirates for its pivotal role in raising crucial climate issues during the initial days of COP28, notably activating the climate damage fund and rallying substantial financial support.
On the second day of the summit, Morocco and Portugal signed a joint declaration on an electricity interconnection project between the two countries.
The declaration was signed by Benali and the Portuguese Minister for the Environment and Climate Action, Duarte Cordeiro. It aims to strengthen renewable energy development strategies between the two countries, as well as energy exchange opportunities between the African and European continents.
