Rabat – Moroccan footballers and national team figures have widely celebrated the United Nations Security Council’s adoption of Resolution 2797, which supports Morocco’s proposal to grant the Sahara region autonomous status under its sovereignty.

The resolution, passed on Friday, is seen as a major diplomatic victory for Morocco and a turning point in favor of Morocco’s decades-long battle to recover its southern provinces. The kingdom first introduced the Autonomy Plan in 2007 as a peaceful and realistic framework to resolve the conflict over the Western Sahara region.

The territory has been the subject of a long-standing, politically manufactured dispute since Spain’s withdrawal in 1975.

Resolution 2797 reaffirms international support for Morocco’s proposal and encourages continued negotiations under the UN framework.

Players statements

Following the announcement, several Moroccan football stars shared their reactions on social media and through club channels, expressing pride and support for the decision.

Hakim Ziyech

Hakim Ziyech, who recently joined Wydad, shared a message through the club’s official accounts.

“This is a very big day, because of the vote in favor of the Moroccan Sahara. We are proud and happy for our country. Let’s celebrate. Long live the King, and always Morocco.”

Nordin Amrabat

The former Morocco international and Wydad AC midfielder, Nordin Amrabat, said in a video posted by the club.

“It’s a very big day, and I’m happy,” he said. “I congratulate King Mohammed VI and all Moroccans on the UN Security Council’s decision to support Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Sahara. Alhmadoliah. Long live the King, and always Morocco.”

Achraf Hakimi

Paris Saint-Germain star Achraf Hakimi posted a photo of King Mohammed VI on Instagram with the caption:“God, Homeland, King.”

Other national team players

Other national team players like Yassine Bounou, Nayef Aguerd, Brahim Díaz, Sofyan Amrabat, Youssef En-Nesyri, Bilal El Khannouss, Benjamin Bouchouari, and Sofiane Boufal all shared similar messages on their Instagram stories, posting the national slogan: “God, Homeland, King.”

National team coach Walid Regragui also joined the celebration, posting the same phrase on his social media.

The widespread reaction from Morocco’s football community highlights the deep connection between sport and national identity.

Players and coaches used their platforms to show unity and pride in this historic moment for Morocco.

Resolution 2797 not only supports Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara but also strengthens the country’s diplomatic position and calls for continued efforts toward a peaceful resolution of the lingering Sahara issue.
