Rabat– Morocco’s coastal and artisanal fisheries generated over MAD 9.57 billion ($920 million) in sales during the first eleven months of 2025, according to the National Office of Fisheries (ONP).
Despite the strong revenue, total landings decreased by 15% compared to the same period in 2024, totaling 1,048,347 tonnes, the ONP reported in its latest fisheries statistics.
By species, shellfish saw a dramatic increase in value, surging 1,458%, while seaweed and white fish recorded gains of 26% and 8% respectively. In contrast, landings of pelagic fish and cephalopods declined by 9% and 5%.
In terms of weight, shellfish reached 943 tonnes, seaweed 26,278 tonnes, and white fish 129,089 tonnes. Pelagic fish fell to 836,341 tonnes, cephalopods to 48,785 tonnes, and crustaceans to 6,912 tonnes.
Regional data show that Mediterranean ports recorded 14,346 tonnes of coastal and artisanal fishery products, up 7% year-on-year, with sales rising 3% to nearly MAD 626.1 million ($60 million).
Atlantic ports, however, experienced a decline, with landings dropping 15% to 1,034,001 tonnes and revenue falling 4% to MAD 8.95 billion ($860 million).
The ONP attributes these trends to shifts in species demand and seasonal variations, highlighting the continued importance of Morocco’s fisheries sector for both domestic consumption and export markets.
