Rabat – Bank Al-Maghrib (BAM) has announced the release of a commemorative coin and a special MAD 100 banknote to mark Morocco’s hosting of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

This new release combines national symbols with references to football and newly developed sports facilities.

In a statement, the central bank said the commemorative coin carries on its front side a portrait of King Mohammed VI, accompanied by the inscriptions “Mohammed VI” and “Royaume du Maroc” in Arabic script.

The year of issue, indicated as 1447-2025, also appears in Arabic and Tifinagh characters.

The reverse side features the wording “MOROCCO 2025 المغرب,” alongside an artistic rendering of the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex in Rabat.

A map of Africa crowns the composition, with celebratory fireworks evoking the Africa Cup of Nations, while the face value “250” is shown in figures.

The coin is minted in proof quality and made from a silver and copper alloy. It weighs 28.28 grams, measures 38.61 millimeters in diameter, and has a reeded edge, according to BAM.

Alongside the coin, BAM also introduced a commemorative MAD 100 banknote designed to reflect Morocco’s approach to sports development and infrastructure.

The front side of the note includes a portrait of King Mohammed VI, the national coat of arms, a stylized view of the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex, the African continent, traditional Moroccan arabesque motifs, and a graphic interpretation of a football.

On the reverse, the name of the issuing institution appears in Tifinagh and Latin scripts, accompanied by an interior view of the Rabat sports complex.

The design also incorporates stylized football players in motion, a ball featuring the map of Africa, dynamic star motifs suggesting celebration, and a combination of Moroccan and African decorative patterns.

BAM said the commemorative banknote integrates advanced security features, including a windowed security thread with color-shifting effects, see-through registration elements, special inks that change appearance depending on the viewing angle, tactile reliefs for the visually impaired, and microtext.

The limited-edition MAD 100 banknote will be issued on December 22. It has legal tender status and will circulate alongside the standard MAD 100 notes already in use.

BAM added that the entire design and production process for the commemorative coin and banknote was carried out by Moroccan specialists at Dar As-Sikkah.

Morocco is hosting the AFCON 2025, a tournament that places the country at the center of continental football.

Matches are taking place across several cities, supported by upgraded stadiums and related infrastructure, as Morocco welcomes national teams, officials, and supporters from across Africa.
