Rabat – Morocco’s General Directorate of Meteorology has warned that the country will experience severe winter weather from Monday until Wednesday, with snow, heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds affecting several regions.
In an orange-level weather alert, the weather authority said that snowfall is expected in mountain areas starting from 1,500 meters. Snow accumulation of 20 to 40 centimeters is forecast in provinces such as Midelt, Boulemane, Ifrane, Sefrou, and Taza, while 5 to 15 centimeters are expected in other areas including Beni Mellal, Azilal, Khénifra, Ouarzazate, Tinghir, Al Haouz, Chefchaouen, and Jerada.
Snowfall will begin on Monday morning and continue until late Tuesday night.
The directorate also announced that heavy rain, sometimes accompanied by thunderstorms, will affect many parts of the country. Rainfall amounts of 40 to 70 millimeters are expected between Tuesday night and early Wednesday in northern regions such as Tangier-Assilah, Tetouan, Larache, Ouezzane, Al Hoceima, Ifrane, Kenitra, Taounate, and Chefchaouen.
Other central and coastal areas, including Casablanca, Rabat-Sale, Settat, Fez, Meknes, Khouribga, El Jadida, and Sefrou, are expected to see 25 to 35 millimeters of rain from Tuesday afternoon until Wednesday morning.
Strong wind gusts reaching 75 to 85 kilometers per hour are also forecast on Monday in areas such as Midelt, Boulemane, Ifrane, Tinghir, Guelmim, Ouarzazate, and Sidi Ifni.
According to the meteorological directorate, this weather situation is part of a broader unstable winter pattern that will continue throughout the week. An active low-pressure system, combined with cold air masses, will bring rain, thunderstorms, and snowfall, especially to the north, the Rif, the Mediterranean coast, and the Atlas Mountains.
The unstable conditions are expected to continue into midweek due to successive Atlantic weather systems, spreading rainfall to central regions and northern parts of the southern provinces. Snow will persist in high-altitude areas, while strong winds may continue in some regions.
Weather conditions are expected to remain changeable by the end of the week, with cloudy skies and scattered rain, especially in the far northwest. Cold to very cold temperatures will continue in mountainous areas and the eastern highlands.
