Agadir – Mohamed Saad Berrada, Minister of National Education, Preschool and Sports, has announced that Morocco has considerably strengthened its educational infrastructure over the past three years.

Speaking during a session at the House of Councillors in Rabat on Tuesday, the minister said that out of approximately 12,000 across Morocco, more than 9,000 school facilities have been rehabilitated since 2022.

An integral part of the government’s 2022–2026 education roadmap, the widespread renovation campaign reflects an ambitious effort to modernize school buildings and improve learning conditions, particularly in rural and underserved areas.

The rehabilitation program covers a wide range of activities, Berrada explained, noting that 4,628 primary schools and 786 secondary schools have been upgraded to transform Morocco’s public education infrastructure.

The program has also addressed the issue of access to potable water. Around 4,000 of approximately 13,000 satellite schools lacked water connections, limiting basic hygiene and sanitation. To mitigate this gap, the ministry worked to connect schools to water networks, while installing water tanks in locations where network connections are not feasible.

In addition, the program focused on improving school infrastructure and safety. Sanitary facilities were constructed in 3,345 schools, while boundary walls were built in 2,063 establishments to enhance hygiene and security.

Meanwhile, more than 5,100 schools were upgraded to improve accessibility for students with disabilities, in line with broader inclusion objectives.

In satellite schools, 4,851 prefabricated classrooms were demolished and replaced with permanent structures, improving safety and learning conditions.

The rehabilitation program also includes measures to improve student welfare and preparedness throughout the year. Ahead of the winter season, the ministry equipped 2,814 schools with heating systems, including 2,600 in rural areas.

These measures are expected to benefit around 444,000 students, particularly during cold weather, ensuring that basic comfort and learning conditions are met across diverse regions.

These renovations are part of a broader national strategy to reform Morocco’s education system, which has included partnerships with international development organisations to support infrastructure and pedagogical improvements.

In 2024, Morocco signed with the French Development Agency (AFD) a €134.7 million agreement to finance systemic reforms under the Moroccan government’s 2022-2026 roadmap.
