Rabat – The stormy weather in Morocco has delayed several flights at the Casablanca Mohammed V Airport.

The National Airports Office (ONDA) confirmed the news, attributing the situation to the weather conditions.

Le360 quoted ONDA, stressing that the delay and disruption was due to the strong wind and sandstorms in several Moroccan provinces.

The news outlet said the situation disrupted several take offs, causing delays.

A flight from Malabo that was supposed to land at Casablanca diverted its route to Marrakech Al Massira Airport due to the weather conditions.

“We should note that decisions regarding take-offs and landing also fall under the jurisdiction of the captains, who have full authority to operate in such circumstances,” Le360 quoted ONDA as saying.

State news outlet SNRTNews also quoted a source from the aviation industry stressing that air traffic at the airport has been suspended from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. today due to the strong winds and the dust storm.

“The planes that were supposed to land at Mohammed V Airport have been redirected to Marrakech and Agadir airports,” SNRTNews said, noting that the resumption of air traffic at the airport depends on the weather conditions.

Morocco’s weather office issued several weather alerts, forecasting stormy weather marked by sandstorms, gusts of winds, and rainfall.

A weather alert on Saturday said that strong winds, dust storms, and heavy rainfall will hit several provinces across Morocco, including cities near Rabat.

The weather will persist until Monday. Several photos show the skies turning reddish in Moroccan cities. Videos also showed damaged traffic signs in Morocco’s highways.
