India Re-Elects Nawal El Moutawakel to International Olympic Committee

Former Moroccan Olympic champion Nawal El Moutawakel was re-elected on Monday in the Indian city of Mumbai to serve another eight years on the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Rabat – Former Moroccan Olympic champion Nawal El Moutawakel was re-elected on Monday in the Indian city of Mumbai to serve another eight years on the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Nawal El Moutawakel, the first Moroccan, Arab, African and Muslim woman to win an Olympic gold medal, in the 400-meter hurdles at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, was re-elected at the 141st IOC Session.

In addition to El Moutawakel, the Committee also voted to re-elect six other members, namely Prince Albert II of Monaco and the Grand Duke of Luxembourg, as independent, non-executive members.

Also re-elected were Valeriy Borzov of Ukraine as an independent individual member to serve until the end of 2029, Gunilla Lindberg of Sweden to serve until the end of 2027, Syed Shahid Ali of Pakistan to serve until the end of 2026, and Nenad Lalovic of Serbia to serve as President of United World Wrestling (UWW) until the end of 2028.

The session also approved the four-year extension of the mandates of two IOC members, namely Luis Mejia Oviedo of the Dominican Republic and Gerardo Werthein of Argentina.

In addition, two members were elected to the IOC’s Executive Board for a second four-year term.

These included Prince Feisal Al Hussein of Jordan and Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe; Coventry had already served on the Executive Board from 2018 to 2021 as Chairman of the IOC Athletes’ Commission.

For her part, Irish Ambassador Patricia O’Brien was re-elected for a final four-year term as an independent member of the IOC Ethics Commission.

India hosted the IOC Session for the second time in almost 40 years, following the 86th Session held in New Delhi in 1983.
