Rabat – FIFA has sanctioned Nigeria and DR Congo for separate violations incurred during the final of the African playoff for the 2026 World Cup in Rabat last November.

The world governing body stated that Nigeria was penalized for violation of Article 17 and Article 17.2.b of the FIFA disciplinary code which pertains to order and security at matches.

The national team was fined 1,000 Swiss Francs (MAD 11,933.59) as a result of fans throwing objects onto the pitch.

Meanwhile, DR Congo received heavier sanctions for violation of Article 17.2.d of the FIFA Disciplinary Code to the tune of 5,000 Swiss Francs (MAD 59,670.63) after it was found that their fans used laser pointers or similar electronic devices during the match.

Upcoming fixtures and playoff context

Nigeria are scheduled to play in a friendly tournament in Antalya, Turkiye, later this month, against Jordan, Nigeria, Costa Rica, and Iran.

The tournament venue has been moved from Amman due to the current warin the Middle East. Jordan, Costa Rica and Iran have already qualified for the World Cup and are using this friendly tournament to help prepare.

The tournament, which begins on March 27, coincides with the FIFA intercontinental playoffs to be held in Mexico. DR Congo will face the winner of either New Caledonia or Jamaica in the intercontinental playoff final. The winner of the final will earn one of the six remaining spots in the World Cup.

FIFA has still not commented on the petition against DR Congo by Nigeria, alleging that they fielded ineligible players during the final. Nigeria lost any hope of making the World Cup after they lost 4-3 in penalties after a 1-1 draw.

However, if DR Congo is found guilty, they might face sanctions up to and including, match forfeiture, which would open up a spot for Nigeria in the playoffs.

With less than 10 days before the playoffs, it seems unlikely that FIFA will decide in time.

DR Congo has already released their lineup for the upcoming playoff and await their chance to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1974.
