Rabat –  A hospital in Casablanca announced an investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding reported vision complications by a group of patients undergoing treatment in the ophthalmology department at the hospital.

The administration of the “August 20” hospital said that the case concerns 16 patients suffering from retinal diseases with visual impairment.

The patients received intravitreal injections on September 19, in accordance with established protocols.

On September 20, however, two of the patients exhibited symptoms of eye redness as well as visual impairment and pain, the directorate of the hospital said.

“The medical staff summoned all patients who received injections on September 19, and admitted them to the hospital and provided them with the necessary treatments,” the hospital said.

The administration of the hospital claimed that all patients showed significant improvement following their treatment, adding that five of them have been discharged after completing their treatment

Other patients remain in the hospital to receive further medical care under the supervision of specialist doctors.

In response to complaints linking the injections to the vision issues reported by the patients, the department said that the medicines are “considered a breakthrough in the treatment of retinal diseases and are used in eye clinics worldwide to slow down visual deterioration in patients.”

The department argued that ophthalmologists at the hospital have been also using such injections for years to treat this disease that causes visual impairment. The use of the injections came following recommendations issued by all national and international ophthalmological associations, the administration said.
