Rabat – Morocco’s exports of frozen raspberries to Spain have reached a record high in the 2022-2023 season, new data from East Fruit said.

Spanish markets have been loyal to Morocco’s frozen berries exports for four consecutive years, marking a steady growth in the North African country’s supplies.

Despite the growth, this season saw an “unpleasant surprise for producers,” the report added, as the revenues producers received from exports went down compared to the previous period.

Explaining the data, the agriculture-focused website said that despite frozen raspberry exports seeing a 25% increase in supply volume, revenue decreased by 30%.

Producers received $5.4 million from sales of frozen raspberries in the 2022-23 market year.

Taking a look at the data on the total supplies of frozen raspberries and blackberries, East Fruit said that the volume of Moroccan berry exports increased eightfold over the period of four years.

Moroccan berry exports to Spain exceeded 4,000 tonnes in the market year 2022-23, the data said.

In addition to Morocco, Spain also imports frozen raspberries from different markets, including Poland, Serbia, and Belgium.

The European country also imported berries from 18 countries, with Morocco topping the list with 57% or half of all shipments in the previous season.

East Fruit said that Morocco ranks as the 8th largest frozen raspberry global exporter, having previously ranked 23rd, and not being considered a major player.

Exports of Moroccan frozen raspberries to foreign markets brought the country a revenue of $23 million in the 2022-2023 season.
