Rabat – Trump’s senior advisor, Massad Boulos, reaffirmed US’ consistent and unwavering support for Morocco’s genuine Autonomy Plan as the only framework to find a solution to end the dispute over Western Sahara.

Boulos reaffirmed US support in a meeting he described as constructive with Alexander Ivanko, the head of peacekeeping operations, MINURSO.

“I reaffirmed U.S. support for a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution in Western Sahara based on genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty,” Boulos said on X.

He added that the meeting also served as a platform to discuss the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution (UNSC) 2797.

The UNSC adopted the resolution last year in October, recognizing Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as a genuine political basis to end the dispute.

The resolution also urged all parties to engage in dialogue to back the UN-led political process to find a mutually acceptable and realistic solution to the dispute.

Boulos’ meeting with the MINURSO head came amid a glimpse of hope in engaging parties to the dispute in rounds of discussions, particularly Algeria and Polisario.

Algeria’s regime has long refused to shoulder its responsibility in the dispute, alleging that a solution should be reached between Morocco and Polisario. The Algerian regime claims it’s an observer to the dispute rather than a main party, an allegation that has been challenged and refuted by the latest UN resolution.

Recently, the US facilitated two dialogue meetings between the parties to the dispute in February, convening all parties to the dispute to discuss a solution for the 50-year-long dispute.

UN personal envoy for the Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, said earlier this month that the ongoing efforts offer a real opportunity to move toward a lasting solution.

He made his remarks in a briefing at the UNSC, stating that there is a “genuine momentum” emerging from recent rounds of consultations, noting that the discussions helped clarify key parameters of a political settlement aligned with UNSC resolutions.

The center of this development covers Morocco’s Autonomy Plan, which is backed by over 120 countries as the only feasible pathway to ending the dispute.

Recently, Canada joined a growing list of countries that declared the Autonomy Plan as a credible and serious basis to settle the Sahara dispute.

In addition to Boulos, US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau reiterated the US administration’s steadfast support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces during his visit to Rabat on Wednesday.

He said that the Moroccan Autonomy Plan is the “only basis for a just and lasting solution to the territorial dispute over the Sahara.”
