Rabat – Morocco’s phosphate giant, OCP Group, has pledged MAD 1 billion ($97.5 million) to the special fund 126 Fund dedicated to earthquake relief efforts.
OCP Group usually invited employees to take part in a fund-raising campaign to help earthquake victims. The company set up a “matching funds” system, whereby it will match donations raised from employees, converging reports indicate.
The September 8 earthquake claimed nearly 3,000 lives, with over 5,000 injured. In addition, it left a trail of destruction, with whole villages flattened, leaving hundreds in need of shelter.
As rescue operations seem to be nearing an end, attention is now directed to the reconstruction efforts. This week, a ministerial committee held a meeting to discuss the implementation of a rehabilitation program.
On Thursday, King Mohammed VI held a meeting with the inter-ministerial committee responsible for putting into action a plan to help displaced victims, which involves offering financial assistance for the reconstruction of their homes.
Following the meeting, it was announced that households that have been affected will receive MAD 30,000 ($2,925) as immediate emergency relief.
In addition, those whose homes suffered partial damage will be eligible for MAD 80,000 ($7,801), while those whose homes were completely destroyed will receive MAD 140,000 ($13,600).
