Rabat – The Moroccan businessman and former Economy Minister Moulay Hafid Elalamy has donated MAD 20 million ($1.9 million) to Fund 126, the national fund for earthquake relief efforts.
According to reports, Elalamy made the donation through the Saham Foundation, a charity affiliated with the insurance company he owns.
The news comes as a number of public and private companies and associations are donating money for earthquake relief efforts.
The earthquake, which hit central Morocco on September 8, left a trail of destruction, claiming nearly 3,000 lives.
Yesterday, Morocco’s King Mohammed VI personally contributed MAD 1 billion (nearly $100 million) to the special relief fund.
The donation was authorized by the board of directors of the Al Mada Group, of which the King is a major shareholder.
Affected households will receive immediate emergency aid of MAD 30,000 ($2,925), followed by MAD 80,000 ($7,801) for those whose homes sustained partial damage, and MAD 140,000 ($13,600) for those whose homes were completely destroyed.
The earthquake, which struck several provinces across Morocco, primarily affected rural areas where infrastructure was ill-equipped to withstand such a devastating earthquake.
On Tuesday, the King paid a visit to the King Mohammed VI University Hospital in Marrakech, where many of the injured are receiving care. During his visit, he personally donated blood to support the ongoing relief efforts.
