Rabat – Peru announced its decision to suspend diplomatic relations with the self-proclaimed Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) on Friday.

The decision is in “accordance with the rules of international law,” a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Peru said on Friday.

“Pery, faithful to the principles of international law that guide its foreign policy, reiterates its willingness to continue supporting, within the framework of the United Nations, all efforts aimed at achieving a just, sustainable, and mutually acceptable political solution by all parties to the Western Sahara dispute,” the statement added.

A solution to the dispute should be based on “compromise” in line with the  UN Charter’s principles and objectives, the Peruvian ministry added.

The decision is another setback for the Polisario Front and its supporters– mainly the Algerian regime– which finances, arms, supports, and hosts the separatist group.

Morocco reacted to Peru’s decision by welcoming the move, with Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Ministry describing the news as a “wise decision in accordance with international law.”

The ministry stressed that this opens up new prospects for bilateral cooperation.

“This decision reinforces the positive momentum experienced by the Kingdom’s territorial integrity file under the impetus of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, ” the Moroccan statement concluded.

The news came a year after Peru’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a communique, reiterating “the sovereign will” of the government to re-establish relations with the self-proclaimed SADR in “accordance with Official Communiqué No. 017-2021, dated September 8, 2021.”

The news came roughly one month after Lima withdrew its recognition of the Polisario separatists.
