Rabat – At the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Yassine Bounou became the definitive face of Morocco’s historic run to the semifinals. His crucial penalty saves against Spain turned him into a global sporting figure overnight.
By keeping four clean sheets during the tournament, the Moroccan goalkeeper anchored a defense that made history as the first African and Arab team to reach the final four of the competition.
Born in Montreal, Canada, in 1991, before moving to Morocco at an early age, Bounou developed his football foundations in the youth academy of Wydad Casablanca.
The Rise in Spain
His professional journey later took him to Spain where he spent over ten years, moving from a backup player to a top goalkeeper in La Liga. After developing his skills with Atlético Madrid and Girona, he joined Sevilla in 2019, where his career reached the highest European level.
At Sevilla, Bounou helped the team win two UEFA Europa League titles, in 2020 and 2023. In the 2023 final against Roma, his key saves during the penalty shootout earned him the Player of the Match award and proved his ability to perform under pressure.
The Morocco international also won the prestigious Zamora Trophy for the 2021–22 season as the best goalkeeper in Spain. He became the first player in Sevilla’s history to win this award, finishing the year with the lowest goals-against average in the league.
This gradual rise through European football built the steady experience and consistency that eventually made him a key player on the international stage.
Move to Al-Hilal
In August 2023, Bono officially left Sevilla to join the Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal. The transfer was valued at a reported €21 million, marking a major financial and professional shift for the goalkeeper.
He departed Spain on a high note, playing his final match for Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup against Manchester City. The club and its fans gave him an emotional farewell, honoring him as a legend who brought stability to their defense and two European trophies to the city.
The club posted a video of Bono’s crucial saves with the caption: “You’ve always been an example both on and off the pitch, Yassine. Thank you and the very best of luck in the future.”
Success in the Gulf
Since joining Al Hilal, the Moroccan goalkeeper adapted quickly to the Saudi Pro League, immediately establishing himself as a reliable starter and became a key part of the Riyadh club’s defense.
During his first season, the keeper helped Al Hilal win both the Saudi Pro League title and the Saudi King’s Cup. His consistent performances earned him the league’s Goalkeeper of the Season award for the 2023-24 campaign.
The shot-stopper continued his success by winning the Saudi Super Cup and another King’s Cup title in May 2026. His achievements in Saudi Arabia, alongside his performances for Morocco, also earned him the CAF African Goalkeeper of the Year award.
Looking Ahead to 2026
The veteran goalkeeper remains a key asset for the national team during the 2026 World Cup, providing vital experience as a dynamic Moroccan squad fights to repeat its past success on the global stage.
Securing his spot in the lineup marks his third consecutive World Cup appearance, a feat achieved by only a select group of Moroccan internationals.
