Rabat – Tensions in the occupied West Bank escalated on Friday when Israeli forces stormed the town of Aqaba, resulting in the death of a Palestinian man and widespread condemnation from international observers. The incident unfolded during an Israeli raid aimed at apprehending a wanted Palestinian, which ended in a deadly crossfire and the destruction of a building, Al Jazeera reported today.
Abdul Rahim Fayez Ghannam, a 36-year-old Palestinian resident of Aqaba, became the unfortunate victim of the confrontation, succumbing to a gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital shortly after the incident.
Nidal Odeh, the director of emergency services in Aqaba, reported that Israeli forces obstructed the efforts of Palestinian ambulances to reach the wounded. Shockingly, one ambulance was targeted directly by live ammunition, exacerbating the crisis and sparking outrage among local residents and humanitarian organizations.
The Israeli incursion into Aqaba was conducted with the aim of apprehending Ahmad Walid, whom Israeli authorities had accused of carrying out a shooting attack near a checkpoint in the Jordan Valley just a month prior. Despite their extensive efforts, Israeli soldiers failed to locate Walid, who was believed to be hiding in one of the buildings at the center of the operation.

Saleh Abu Arra, an eyewitness to the incident, recounted how Israeli forces entered the town, believing that the wanted individual was holed up in one of the buildings. To the Israeli troops’ dismay, their target was not there. As the operation escalated, a firefight erupted between armed fighters and Israeli soldiers, leading to tragic consequences.
The Israeli army released a statement acknowledging the deadly confrontation and indicating that “a hit was identified on one of the gunmen” during the exchange of fire. Additionally, troops employed shoulder-fired missiles and grenades during the operation, which ultimately resulted in the discovery of improvised explosive devices and other weapons in the targeted building.
This incident is the latest in a series of near-daily Israeli military raids in the occupied West Bank, marking one of the most significant escalations of violence in the region since the early 2000s. The United Nations reports that more than 200 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces since the beginning of this year alone, making 2023 the deadliest year for Palestinians since the UN began recording Palestinian fatalities in 2006.
Meanwhile, the incident in Aqaba has sparked international concern, with calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a renewed commitment to finding a peaceful resolution to the long-standing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
