Casablanca — Morocco’s consumer price index rose by 1.7% in April 2026 compared with the same month last year, according to the High Commission for Planning (HCP).
The increase was driven by a 0.6% rise in food prices and a stronger 2.5% increase in non-food products, the HCP said in its latest note on the consumer price index.
Among non-food products, changes ranged from a 0.3% drop in communication prices to an 8.4% increase in transport.
Compared with March, the CPI rose by 0.4% in April. This came as non-food prices increased by 1.2%, while food prices fell by 0.6%.
Several food categories recorded monthly declines. Prices of fish and seafood dropped by 11.1%, while milk, cheese and eggs fell by 3.2%. Vegetable prices were down 1.8%, oils and fats declined by 1.6%, and bread and cereals slipped by 0.2%.
Other food items moved in the opposite direction. Fruit prices rose by 4.7%, meat increased by 1.6%, and mineral water, soft drinks, fruit juices and vegetable juices went up by 0.3%.
For non-food products, the main monthly increase came from fuel prices, which jumped by 21.8%.
The highest monthly increases in the CPI were recorded in Laâyoune, where prices rose by 1.6%. Tetouan and Al Hoceima followed with 0.9%, while Casablanca posted a 0.8% increase.
Prices also rose by 0.7% in Safi, 0.6% in Oujda, Rabat and Errachidia, and 0.3% in Fès and Meknès. Smaller increases of 0.2% were recorded in Agadir, Kenitra, Tangier and Guelmim.
Meanwhile, prices fell by 0.4% in Marrakech and Beni Mellal, and by 0.3% in Settat.
Core inflation, which excludes volatile price items and public tariffs, rose by 0.1% compared with March 2026. Compared with April 2025, it fell by 0.3%.
