Rabat – Alstom, the renowned French manufacturer, has announced a significant investment of 160 million Moroccan dirhams ($16.5 million) aimed at enhancing the railway industry in Morocco.

The investment will facilitate the establishment of a second plant in Fez, which will be solely dedicated to the production of driving cabs for regional trains and metros, Alstom said in a statement. The initiative is expected to generate 200 direct employment opportunities by 2025, the French company added.

Building on its existing presence in the North African county, Alstom Morocco has previously expanded its Fez facility in 2020 and launched a second production line. The facility currently focuses on manufacturing Mitrac electrical wiring and transformers, employing a workforce of 850 individuals, with women constituting an impressive 56% of the workforce.

Mama Sougoufara, the Managing Director of Alstom MENAT (Middle East, North & Central Africa and Turkey), expressed the company’s commitment to further investing in Morocco and its determination to establish an additional manufacturing site in Fez for the production of cabins dedicated to regional trains and metros.

Over the past four years, Alstom Morocco has consistently prioritized its industrial development, investing a total of 320 million Moroccan dirhams ($32.9 million). This sustained commitment has enabled the company to successfully execute 25 international projects. As part of its expansion plans, Alstom aims to create a total of 1,200 jobs by the year 2025, contributing significantly to the local economy and job market.

Alstom’s investment in Morocco’s railway industry highlights the company’s confidence in the country’s potential and its commitment to fostering technological advancement, the press statement argued.

It added that the establishment of a second plant will not only bolster Alstom Morocco’s domestic manufacturing capabilities but also create a substantial number of direct employment opportunities, providing a significant boost to the local workforce. The move also emphasizes Alstom’s dedication to sustainable growth and its determination to contribute to the development of the transportation infrastructure in Morocco, the statement concluded.
