Rabat – Morocco’s National Bureau for Combating Economic and Financial Crime, a branch of the National Criminal Investigation Department (BNPJ), referred on Thursday eight people to appear in the Court of Appeal in Rabat for their alleged involvement in the misappropriation and embezzlement of public funds.

Among the suspects were three police officers also accused of filing declarations containing fraudulent data.

A press release from the Directorate General of National Security (DGSN) indicated that the DGSN had previously undertaken an internal audit of a cavalry school’s financial management, which revealed fraud in public contracts.

The audit necessitated a temporary suspension of the school’s former director and his referral to a judicial investigation under the supervision of the public prosecutor’s office.

The same source added that the investigations carried out involved seven other people suspected of complicity in these criminal acts.

Among the seven people were five company managers and other police officers detained for investigation in a separate case.

Those referred to the public prosecutor’s office were imprisoned by order of the judicial authority, while one of the suspects was placed under judicial supervision.

According to the press release, this case is part of efforts by the national security services to combat financial crimes and consolidate the principles of integrity in the work of police services.

A similar case was filed yesterday in Fez as the Criminal Appeal Chamber in charge of financial crimes at the Fez Appeal Court handed the parliamentarian Rachid El Fayek to an 8-year prison.

The other suspects involved in the same case were pursued for numerous criminal acts, namely bribery, embezzlement of public funds, illegal collection of interest, and forgery of official papers.

Other crimes included treachery, fraud, and handing over administrative certificates to ineligible people, among others.

In addition to the penal sentence, the court also fined El Fayek MAD 1 million ($100,580).
