Rabat – Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita highlighted the positive impact of the Abraham Accords on regional peace and prosperity, stressing Morocco’s commitment to its Jewish heritage as well as support for the Jewish community, the American Jewish Committee (AJC) reported.

Bourita made the statements on Monday in a video addressed to more than 1,500 attendees at the ongoing AJC Global Forum 2023 in Tel Aviv, emphasizing the positive impact of the Abraham Accords on peace and prosperity in the Middle East.

The Abraham Accords, signed between Arab countries and Israel, have created “incredible momentum” for peace in the region, Bourita said, expressing Morocco’s deep pride in its Jewish heritage and unwavering support for its Jewish community and institutions.

He described Morocco as a land of coexistence where Muslims and Jews have lived in harmony for centuries under the protection of Moroccan monarchs.

Bourita praised Morocco’s commitment to preserving its Jewish heritage and supporting the Moroccan Jewish community, recalling that King Mohammed VI has authorized the restoration of 15 synagogues, 168 Jewish cemeteries, and other holy sites.

Highlighting the significance of the Abraham Accords, Bourita stated, “After decades of war and hatred, there is now a unique opportunity for peace.”

The normalization pact, signed on December 10, 2020, led to the re-establishment and upgrade of diplomatic relations between Morocco and Israel.

The accord aimed to revive economic and cultural ties between the two nations and foster cooperation in various sectors, including energy, security, and health.

Bourita noted the significant progress made in bilateral relations between Morocco and Israel since the signing of the Abraham Accords.

He mentioned that Morocco has welcomed over a dozen high-ranking Israeli officials, experienced a remarkable 160% increase in trade, and witnessed a fivefold rise in Israeli tourists over the past two years.

Expressing gratitude for the longstanding relationship between Morocco and the AJC, Bourita commended the organization for building meaningful friendships within the American Jewish community.

He acknowledged the AJC’s advocacy efforts in fostering a strong and enduring Moroccan-American partnership. Notably, the AJC demonstrated support for Morocco’s territorial integrity through a delegation visit to Dakhla in May.

The AJC is a global advocacy organization “dedicated to the well-being of the Jewish people and Israel.”
