Rabat – Switzerland beat Algeria 2-0 on Thursday in Vancouver to reach the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16.
According to BeIN Sports, Riyad Mahrez announced his retirement directly after the match.
“We controlled the match…But we conceded twice due to errors,” Mahrez said.
“Yes, this is my last World Cup match with Algeria and my last match with a green jersey,” the 35-year-old added.
Mahrez announced his retirement from international football after 12 years with Algeria, saying he is proud of his journey and believes it is time for a new generation to take over.
He concludes his international career with 120 appearances and 40 goals, making him one of Algeria’s most-capped players. His greatest achievement with the national team was captaining Algeria to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title.
Although his career brought memorable successes, it also included setbacks , such as failures to qualify for the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups and several early exits at the AFCON. At 35, Mahrez had hoped to finish his international career on a higher note before deciding to step away.
