Rabat– Morocco’s Directorate General of Meteorology (DGM) has extended an orange-level heat wave alert through Wednesday, warning that temperatures could climb as high as 46°C across several provinces, while strong winds are also expected in parts of the country’s north.

According to the Directorate, temperatures between 43°C and 46°C are forecast in several provinces, including Marrakech, El Kelaâ des Sraghna, Rehamna, Khémisset, Sidi Slimane, Sidi Kacem, Kénitra, Settat, Chichaoua, Youssoufia, Fquih Ben Salah, Béni Mellal, Taroudant, Tata, Zagora, Assa-Zag, Es-Semara, Boujdour, Oued Ed-Dahab, and Aousserd.

Meanwhile, highs ranging from 40°C to 43°C are expected in other provinces, including Agadir-Ida-Ou-Tanane, Chtouka-Ait Baha, Inezgane-Ait Melloul, Tiznit, Guelmim, Meknès, Fès, Moulay Yaâcoub, Khouribga, Errachidia, Tinghir, Taza, Taounate, Sefrou, Benslimane, Berrechid, Essaouira, Safi, and Larache.

The DGM also forecasts temperatures between 41°C and 44°C in the inland areas of Tan-Tan, Tarfaya, and Laâyoune from Sunday through Wednesday. Coastal cities, including Rabat, Salé, Casablanca, Mohammedia, Skhirat-Témara, El Jadida, and Ifrane, are expected to experience relatively milder conditions, with temperatures ranging from 33°C to 38°C over the weekend.

In addition to the extreme heat, strong wind gusts of 75 to 85 km/h are expected on Saturday in the northern provinces of Tangier-Assilah and Fahs-Anjra.

The warning comes as Morocco’s Ministry of Health urged residents to take precautions against heat-related illnesses.

The ministry called on the public to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, stay well hydrated, and pay particular attention to vulnerable groups, including children, older adults, pregnant women, and people living with chronic illnesses.

Authorities also encouraged people working outdoors or engaging in physical activities under the sun to increase their water intake and limit exposure during the hottest hours of the day.
