Rabat – Police officers arrested a 67-year-old French citizen at Fez-Sais international airport on June 3, for the possession and distribution of pornographic content involving minors.
The suspect was arrested while he was preparing to take a flight to a French airport. National security databases showed that he was the subject of a nationwide search issued against him by the judicial police in Meknes, according to a security source.
The same source added that the research data indicated that the suspect was involved in downloading, using, and sharing digital pornographic content on the internet, which depicted sexual exploitation of children in foreign countries.
The suspect is now being kept under police custody for investigation by the judicial police in Meknes to identify all the criminal acts he was involved in.
The protection of children from sexual abuse has been under the spotlight recently in Morocco, following light sentences handed to child rapists in separate cases.
The judgments ignited outrage among civil rights groups and activists in the country, who demanded harsher sentences and a re-examining of the Moroccan penal code and how it punishes abusers.
Recently, Moroccan NGO “Touche pas a mon enfant” (Do not touch my child) commended an eight-year prison sentence handed to Spaniard Felix Ramos for his involvement in human trafficking, rape, and child abuse.
