Argentina’s Falklands Banner After England Win Could Trigger FIFA Action

What began as a World Cup celebration quickly turned into a political talking point after Argentina players unveiled a message that could attract FIFA's attention.

Casablanca– Argentina’s celebrations after reaching a second consecutive FIFA World Cup final have sparked fresh controversy after several players displayed a banner backing the country’s claim to the Falkland Islands following their dramatic semifinal victory over England.

The banner, which read “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” (“The Falkland Islands are Argentinian”), was briefly held by players during their on-pitch celebrations before being left on the field after the match.

The display came despite head coach Lionel Scaloni’s efforts to downplay the political significance of the fixture before kickoff, insisting he wanted the match to remain focused on football rather than the long-standing territorial dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom.

The Falkland Islands remain one of the most sensitive political issues between the two countries.

Argentina has consistently maintained its claim over the South Atlantic archipelago, while the United Kingdom continues to administer the territory following the 1982 Falklands War, a 74-day conflict during which 655 Argentine servicemen, 255 British servicemen, and three people from the islands died.

While Britain has administered the South Atlantic archipelago since 1833, Argentina continues to claim the islands as part of its national territory, and the issue remains deeply rooted in Argentine politics and national identity, regularly resurfacing in public life, including sport.

The incident could also place Argentina under FIFA scrutiny.

Football’s governing bodies, FIFA and the International Football Association Board (IFAB), prohibit political messages, symbols, and slogans from being displayed during official matches and tournament celebrations.

IFAB’s Laws of the Game state that players must not display political, religious, or personal messages on equipment or clothing, with disciplinary action left to competition organizers, national associations, or FIFA.

While FIFA has not publicly commented on Wednesday’s incident, there is precedent involving the Argentine national team.

In 2014, FIFA fined the Argentine Football Association after players displayed a banner carrying the same “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” message before an international friendly against Slovenia.

Argentina booked its place in the World Cup final after a dramatic comeback victory over England.

However, the post-match celebrations have shifted attention away from the result, with debate now centering on whether the banner breached FIFA’s regulations on political displays at international tournaments.
