Rabat – Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has addressed the Battle of the Malvinas ( most commonly known as the Falklands War) issue as his team prepares to take on England in the World Cup semifinals, insisting that players will focus on what happens on the football pitch.
Scaloni made it clear that the Argentina squad is totally focused on the tournament and does not mix football with nationalistic feelings outside of the sporting arena.
“It’s a football match, and I can’t mix things up and, above all, out of respect for what happened many years ago. It’s a football match. Mixing it would be chaotic because wars are happening all around the world,” said Scaloni at the pre-match press conference. “We have to remember the people who died and their families, but it is not the fault of players; we are wrong if we mix things up.”
The Falklands War was a 10-week undeclared war between the two nations in 1982 over British overseas territories in the South Atlantic.
In June 1982, the United Kingdom won the Falklands War, a battle that resulted in the death of 649 Argentine military personnel.
Fans nowadays are linking “la Guerra de las Malvinas” with the semifinal match between England and Argentina, with high expectations of an intense battle in the upcoming match.
The head coach of the Albiceleste denies all fan narratives and confirms that the Argentine team is focused only on the football match.
Argentina will face the Three Lions in the semifinal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on July 15 at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
