Rabat – Former Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal is reportedly close to joining Getafe on a free transfer, with negotiations between the two sides progressing toward an agreement.
Spanish newspaper ABC first reported that Getafe have opened advanced talks with the 34-year-old, who has been without a club since leaving Real Madrid at the end of last season.
AS reported that Getafe coach José Bordalás has played a central role in the potential deal, personally contacting Carvajal to explain the role he could have in the squad and convince him to continue his career at the Madrid-based club.
Carvajal is reportedly receptive to the move, which would allow him to remain close to his home in Madrid while continuing to play in LaLiga.
Salary limit remains main obstacle
No agreement has been signed yet, with Getafe still needing to make the deal fit within the club’s LaLiga salary limit.
Reports indicate that Carvajal would have to accept considerably lower wages than those he earned at Real Madrid, while Getafe are examining how much room they have available to register him.
A medical examination is also expected to form an important part of the process because of Carvajal’s recent injury history, particularly problems involving his right knee.
La Vanguardia reported that some sources believe the defender may already have undergone medical checks on Tuesday, although there has been no official confirmation from Getafe.
If the financial and medical conditions are resolved, an agreement could be completed in the coming days.
Carvajal officially ended his long spell with Real Madrid this summer after 23 seasons at the club across its academy and senior team.
Real Madrid confirmed in May that the defender would leave at the end of the 2025-26 season. He made 450 first-team appearances, scored 14 goals and won 27 trophies, including six Champions League titles, four LaLiga crowns and two Copa del Rey trophies.
The Spain international had attracted interest from clubs outside the country, including reported attention from AC Milan, but Getafe have now emerged as the strongest option for his next move.
For now, however, the transfer remains under negotiation, with neither Getafe nor Carvajal officially announcing an agreement.
