Rabat – The prosecutor at the Court of First Instance in Zagora announced today a tragic traffic accident in Zagora after a public transport bus traveling from Marrakech overturned, killing four people.
The accident took place at 6 a.m. after a bus traveling from Marrakech to M’Hamid El Ghizlane overturned. The bus was carrying 26 passengers, four of whom died. The prosecutor said the remaining passengers sustained injuries of varying severity.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office opened an investigation to determine the circumstances of the accident and instructed authorities to monitor the injured passengers’ health conditions.
It also instructed authorities to take the necessary procedures to facilitate the burial of the deceased, pledging legal action in light of the investigation’s findings once the probe is completed.
Several similar incidents have left Morocco reeling recently, with official data also confirming challenges involving fatal traffic accidents.
Earlier this year, four police officers died and 26 others were injured after a bus carrying members of Morocco’s mobile police unit crashed near the city of Sidi Ifni.
Recent data from Morocco’s national police showed that traffic accidents in urban areas killed 31 people in the week between October 12 and 18.
Around 3,317 people were injured in traffic accidents during the same week, including 152 who sustained serious injuries.
The main causes included driver inattention, failure to yield the right of way, loss of vehicle control, pedestrian inattention, speeding, unauthorized changes of direction, and turning without signaling. Failure to stop at a red traffic light or stop sign, as well as drunk driving, were also among the cited causes.
