Rabat – Thirty-six people were injured after two buses collided Wednesday night in Rabat, according to local authorities in the prefecture of Rabat. One of the injured is in critical condition.
The accident took place at an intersection on Al Fadila avenue in the Yaacoub Al Mansour neighborhood, when a public transport bus hit a bus carrying players from the Fath amateur football club.
The injured were transported to Ibn Sina Hospital for treatment, while an investigation was opened by the authorities to clarify the circumstances of this accident and determine who was responsible.
According to provisional statistics, traffic accidents killed 3,593 people last year in Morocco, compared with 3,565 people in 2015, a slight increase of 1.79 percent.
These statistics, published by the Department of Road Transport and Road Safety at a meeting of the National Committee for the Prevention of Traffic Accidents, showed an increase of 3.36 percent in the number of deaths in urban areas (984 deaths), and a decrease of 0.15 percent in rural areas (2,609 people).
According to Benacer Bolalouj, the Secretary of the Committee, traffic accidents were less dangerous in 2016 compared to 2015, highlighting the efforts made by various stakeholders in the sectors concerned with road safety .
The National Strategy for Road Safety 2016-2025, launched by the Ministry of Logistics and Transportation, focuses on several areas, including road infrastructure, vehicles, and driving behavior.
The strategy aims to reduce the number of traffic deaths to 25 percent of their current rate by 2020, and to 50 percent by 2025.
