Rabat – Cambodia expressed its full support for Morocco’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in Western Sahara, according to a joint statement issued on Monday following a meeting between Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Nasser Bourita, and his Cambodian counterpart, Prak Sokhonn.
In the statement, Cambodia equally expressed its respect for Morocco’s efforts to reach a political solution to the Western Sahara dispute.
Sokhonn, who is on an official visit to Morocco from March 27-28, stressed that “Cambodia expresses its full support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco and respects its efforts to reach a negotiated political solution to this regional dispute.”
The Cambodian official further states in the statement that Cambodia fully supports the efforts made by the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, and his personal envoy for the desert, Staffan de Mistura, to reach a peaceful resolution to the Western Sahara dispute.
In addition to their meeting, the ministers are scheduled to sign several cooperation agreements “including the Agreement on Air Services,” according to an earlier press release from the Cambodian’s foreign affairs ministry. The deal aims to promote collaboration on tourism, business, and trade.
Morocco Cambodia diplomacy
Morocco and Cambodia enjoy robust diplomatic relations. The two countries have expressed on various occasions their desire to strengthen relations and boost bilateral cooperation in various fields.
In January 2022, Morocco and Cambodia signed an agreement on visa exemption for diplomatic and service passport holders, as well as a Memorandum of Understanding between the Moroccan Academy of Diplomatic Studies and the Cambodian National Institute of Diplomacy and International Studies.
Morocco’s effort to boost relations with Cambodia is part of the North African’s strategy to strengthen south-south cooperation. The country is the first Arab and African country to obtain observer member status at the Interparliamentary Assembly of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (AIPA).
In 2021, Morocco also become an associate member of the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO).
