Rabat – Police in the southern Moroccan city of Laayoune aborted an international drug trafficking operation of nearly 2 tons of cannabis resin also known as Chira, a statement from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) said today.

The DGSN said the operation took place in collaboration with members of the anti-gang squad at Morocco’s National Brigade of Judicial Police (BNPJ).

Security services arrested seven people aged 35 to 49 years old for their alleged involvement in a criminal network that engages in international drug trafficking.

During this operation,  the police seized 51 packages of Chira weighing 1.8 tons, a 4×4 car, two inflatable boats, and two outboard motors, as well as a sum of money totaling MAD 229,660 ($22,000).

The suspects are being held in police custody, pending an investigation by the public prosecutor’s office to shed more light on their apparent involvement with an international trafficking ring, concluded DGSN’s statement.

The operation is part of Morocco’s efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks.

In December 2022, Police in Casablanca aborted an international drug trafficking operation of  25,000 Ecstasy tablets.

According to the latest DGSN annual report, joint field interventions by the police and the DGST allowed for the processing of more than 90,000 cases, including the arrest of over 120,000 people who were involved in drug-related cases.

Police seized 98,543 tonnes of cannabis in 2022, a 49% decrease from the previous year.
