Rabat – Algerian security services arrested the mother and sister of Amira Bouraoui, an activist that risked being deported to Algeria following her recent arrest in Tunisia.
Tunisian authorities arrested Bouraoui in February when she was trying to board a flight to France using her French passport. Reports claimed her arrest was due to her illegal entry to Tunisia.
French authorities in Tunisia helped the French-Algerian activist by providing her with consular support to travel to France. The support she received helped her escape extradition to Algeria.
France’s decision to help the activist angered Algeria’s government. In response to the move, Algeria’s regime recalled its ambassador to France for an immediate consultation.
In response to her support from France, Algeria arrested Bouraoui’s mother and sister.
According to Algeria’s National Committee for the Release of Detainees (CNLD), police in Algeria took Khadija Bouraoui, the mother of Amira Bouraoui into custody over the weekend.
Bouraoui’s sister, Wafa was also arrested, but the police released her at 5 a.m. on Saturday, according to the NGO.
“Transferred very early this morning, Khadija Bouraoui risks being presented today before the prosecutor near the Annaba court. A cousin of the family was also arrested in turn and is being held in custody at the Annaba gendarmerie brigade,” the NGO added.
Algerian police also searched the activist’s family’s home.
Bouraoui’s case came amid the reconciliation process between France and Algeria.
The case came a few weeks after the two countries expressed their determination to enter a new phase of cooperation and mend their historically strained diplomatic ties.
