A powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake rocked southern Turkiye and northern Syria on Monday, leaving at least 1,900 dead across both countries.
The death toll is expected to continue rising, as rescuers continue to clear rubble and survivors are in need of medical attention in already overwhelmed hospitals.
Morocco’s Embassy in Turkiye had released a statement earlier today expressing sympathies and condolences, and released phone numbers and emails of its own for the Moroccan diaspora in the country.
In addition to the human cost of the disaster, several historic and cultural monuments across both countries have also been damaged.
Several countries and organizations have offered aid following the disaster, especially as rescue workers continue to call for help.
UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said his country would be sending rescue specialists and equipment to Turkiye, while UK-funded White Helmets have mobilized in Syria.
US President Joe Biden said his team would be monitoring the situation and would provide any necessary assistance, while French President Emmanuel Macron said his country was ready to provide assistance.
The UN, Ukraine, and Greece, among others have also offered aid to Turkiye and Syria.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan described the quake as the worst disaster for the country since the 1939 earthquake that left 32,000 people dead.
