Rabat – Negotiations between FC Barcelona and Fiorentina have broken down to attain Moroccan midfielder Sofyan Amrabat, Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo reported.
Only a few hours before the January transfer window closes, Barcelona has reportedly moved on to alternative options as Fiorentina raised its demands of the Catalan club.
Mundo Deportivo reported that Barca was looking to get the midfielder on a loan deal until the end of the season, with an option to buy him outright then.
However, Fiorentina is reluctant to let go of its player without immediate compensation, and has reportedly asked Barcelona for a permanent transfer this January, something which the club would not be able to afford due to La Liga’s fair financial play rules.
The Spanish club, which has been facing financial troubles for some years, will reportedly look for alternatives, although with only a few hours left in the transfer window and not many players available, it would be tough to find someone else.
Additionally, Barcelona’s capabilities to sign a new player while complying with La Liga’s financial rules have seemingly been diminished since they were able to register young star Gavi as a team member earlier today.
Reports from earlier today said that Amrabat was pressuring Fiorentina for a move as Barcelona made approaches, but the Italian club is reluctant to let him go. It remains unclear if Blaugrana will make another attempt to sign him in the summer.
Amrabat was part of a Morocco squad that made a historic run to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, stealing the show with a strong performance in the midfield.
Following the tournament, the Moroccan 26-year-old became a target for several top European clubs. In addition to Barcelona, Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur was also reportedly eyeing the player during the January window.
