Rabat – Morocco extended on Thursday the state of emergency for another month until January 31.
The government extended the state of emergency today during the weekly cabinet council.
Adopted in March 2020, the state of emergency designation allows health and security authorities to rapidly deploy emergency measures whenever there are perceptions of Morocco’s COVID-19 epidemic worsensening.
Over the past two years, the Moroccan government has continued to renew the state of emergency despite reports of a significant decrease in the number of COVID- cases reported daily.
Since the pandemic first hit Morocco in March 2020, the country has reported 1,271,440 cases, including 1,254,603 recoveries and 16,294 deaths.
Earlier this week, Morocco’s Ministry of Health predicted the end of the fifth wave of COVID in the country soon.
The spread rate of the virus is now classified as intermediate in seven regions and low in five others, adding that the Omicron virus variant is still the most prominent in the country.
Despite the positive development, the health ministry urges Moroccans to stay vigilant in public and crowded spaces.
