Rabat – Celebrating the 60th anniversary of bilateral relations, the Korean Embassy in Rabat gifted Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs six KIA Niro hybrid vehicles.

The Korean embassy stated in a communique that the gift is “a symbolic gesture [that celebrates] the excellent ties between the two countries.”

Korea’s Ambassador to Morocco Keeyong Chung delivered the package on Wednesday to the Director of Asian and Oceanic Affairs at the Foreign Ministry Abdelkader El Ansari.

The Moroccan diplomat conveyed the thanks of Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita to the Korean government.

Chung and El Ansari called for the need to strengthen bilateral cooperation to address pressing issues such as climate change and energy.

“Korea and Morocco are making great efforts in this area in order to contribute to both national and international efforts,” the statement read.

For his part, Ambassador Chung expressed his hope to implement the bilateral agreement on climate change soon, the agreement is currently under negotiations.

In July, the Export Director of the Moroccan Agency for Investment and Export Development (AMDIE) Meryem Kabbadj praised the “dynamic” relations between Rabat and Seoul, calling upon Korean investors in the automotive and aeronautics sectors to explore growth opportunities in the Moroccan market.

Last year, South Korea exported $7 billion worth of electric cars, placing it fourth globally after Germany ($28.8 billion), the United States ($10.1 billion), and China ($10 billion).

This year, the Korea International Trade Association reported that Korean-made EVs represented 30.3% of the country’s vehicle exports from January to May, adding that Hyundai Motor’s IONIQ 5 and Kia’s EV6 entered the US, the world’s largest car market.

Given the significant growth in Korea’s hybrid and electric vehicle market, Morocco is also interested in increasing its share in the global automotive sector, planning to learn from the Korean experience by consolidating strategic partnerships with Seoul.
