Rabat – Several provinces in Morocco are expected to see heavy rainstorms in the course of this weekend, according to a memo from Morocco’s General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM).
The list of provinces that would see rainstorms includes Boujdour, Laayoune, and Tarfaya, the memo adds. The rainstorms would occur between 2 p.m on Saturday and Sunday at 6 a.m.
Rainfall is set to average between 20 and 30 millimeters.
In addition, other Moroccan provinces would likely see heavy rainfall on Sunday from 10 a.m to 11 p.m. The list of provinces includes Al Haouz, Taroudant, Ouarzazate, Chichaoua, Azilal, Chtouka-Ait Baha, and Tiznit, the DGM memo explains.
News of expected rainfall comes as a welcomed change this year, following last year’s record drought that was further aggravated by consecutive heatwaves.
Last summer, the drastic rise in temperatures and drought resulted in human casualties and considerable property damage in Morocco. The country suffered from unprecedented wildfires that raged across Morocco’s northern provinces for days.
Adding to the material damage, the drought significantly affected Morocco’s water reserves, as the filling rates of national dams dropped to their lowest levels in recent years.
The drought caused the country’s agriculture to lose almost 70% of its cereal production — a staple in the Moroccan national diet –, according to data from the US State Department.
