Casablanca – Sahrawi women’s rights activist Khadijatou Mahmoud, one of the victims of Polisario leader Brahim Ghali’s rape crimes, continues to appeal for justice.
After telling her tragic story before the European Parliament’s Committee on Women’s Rights, the Sahrawi activist received the support of prominent European politicians.
“I came to share with the EU the abusive conditions suffered by women and girls in Tindouf under Brahim Ghali and the Polisario,” she wrote on Twitter. “Very touched by the support of the former Belgian Minister of Family Gisele Mandaila at the Press Club event next to the European Parliament.”
Born in the Tindouf camps in Algeria to a family that followed the Polisario separatists, Mahmoud lived in Spain since 1997 before returning to the camps in 2005 to stay with her family.

In 2010, she accused Ghali of raping her in the self-proclaimed Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic’s (SADR) embassy in Algiers, where he worked as an “ambassador.”
“I was only 18 years old, I was a virgin. Brahim Ghali raped me. This is the worst thing that can happen to a woman and even more so in my society, which is very conservative,” Mahmoud said in an interview with the Spanish news platform La Razon.
In 2013, Mahmoud filed a complaint in Spain against the Polisario leader.
Since then, the Sahrawi activist has spoken out against the Polisario leader’s rape crimes and the inhumane conditions in Tindouf camps.
She has been attempting to mobilize the international community by using the hashtags #stop_polisario and #Justice4Jadiyetu on Twitter to raise awareness about horrible circumstances in the Tindouf camps.
“For decades the Polisario Front has been getting away with the brutal oppression of my people under the world’s radar. No longer,” the Sahrawi activist said in an interview with the Israeli news outlet i24.
