Casablanca – The separatist Polisario Front has threatened to use military drones against Morocco’s Royal Armed Forces stationed along the Western Sahara defense wall.

The announcement came as the Polisario’s leader Brahim Ghali was preparing to launch a military movement from Tindouf for the front’s “war of attrition” against Morocco.

Omar Mansour, the Polisario’s envoy to Mauritania’s President revealed the news at a press conference last week in Nouakchott.

“The Sahrawi army will soon use armed drones in the war of attrition in Western Sahara,” Mansour threatened.

“The war tension is still in a regressive phase, but with the introduction of new weapons and actors,” the separatist envoy continued.

Since the Polisario officially violated the 1991 cease-fire agreement during the Guerguerat events in late 2020, the separatist front’s assaults along the Moroccan defensive line in the Western Sahara region have continued.

Accordingly, the Moroccan Armed Forces have enforced a land and air exclusion zone east of the defensive wall and started operating a variety of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), including Turkish-designed Bayraktar TB2 drones.

Less than twenty-four hours after the Polisario threatened to use unmanned aircraft against Morocco, Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita warned against the acquisition of armed drones by terrorist and separatist groups.

Bourita’s statements came during a press briefing held on Monday in Rabat, after his meeting with his Yemeni counterpart Ahmed Bin Mubarak.

In his speech, Bourita highlighted that “the Iranian regime is the official sponsor of separatism and terrorist groups in a number of Arab countries.”

Tehran’s support “to armed non-state actors represents a threat to regional and international peace,” the Moroccan head of diplomacy added.
